Would You Do This?

June 29th, 2011

Are you one of the millions of people that go to the nail salon for a manicure or pedicure every other week? It can be a relaxing break from the day in additional to keeping your nails looking their best. A trip to a veterinarian for de-clawing of your cat certainly nothing like that!

De-clawing doesn’t sound like anything serious. The cat will be asleep through the process and will wake up and be fine, right? WRONG! Before you even think about de-clawing you should know that it is serious surgery. It is nothing like a nail trim or a manicure. Your cat’s nail is quite different than humans. It is attached to the cat’s bone. In order to remove the claw, the bone must also be removed. Imagine that .happening to you as an outpatient procedure with no pain meds!

De-clawing is a very painful surgery with a painful recovery period. During the first week or more that your cat it recuperating from the surgery he/she would still have to use its feet to walk, jump, and scratch in its litter box regardless of the pain it is experiencing. Crutches, bedpans and wheelchairs are for people, not cats. Although research by vet will tell you differently. If you speak with people in the rescue community you will hear several sad stories about the change in personality of their feline friend after being de-clawed. There are two big reasons cats are turned into rescue: The cat is inappropriately urinating or defecating (not spraying). The second is the cat has started to bite or not use the litter box.

When I hear this I automatically ask, “Is the cat de-clawed?” Invariably the answer is yes! Many cats start either of these behaviors after being de-clawed and this is why. When a cat is trying to use the litter box the cat is a clean animal and wants to dig and cover after eliminating. This will hurt, leading to the cat to associate the litter box with pain. Therefore, they find other places to eliminate. Also, cats use their claws when they play with you. After being de-clawed the play escalates and the cat cannot use his claws to say, “STOP I am over stimulated!” So, he uses his mouth to tell you this.

There are so many choices an owner has instead of de-clawing: Soft Claws, a Cat Behaviorist, nail clipping every 2 weeks, or having appropriate cat condos and cat trees with a variety of scratching surfaces. Any of these choices are fair better for your cat and greatly cheaper than replacing your carpeting!

Missing Cat?

June 26th, 2011

Whether you are a seasoned cat lover or about to adopt your first from a no-kill animal shelter/rescue you will quickly learn one thing. Cats love to be perched high. Did you ever arrive home and were not be able to find your cat? Even after calling their name they still have not come to greet you. After spending tens of minutes searching you find them perched on top the tallest kitchen cabinet or refrigerator! Perfectly silent and watching you’re every move.

Why do cats, even those that are considered “lap cats” love to be perched high? This allows them to avoid predators and a surprise attack on their next meal. So, how can you accommodate this natural instinct in your home?

First consider an appropriate location for a tall cat condo, preferably in front of a window. Cats love watching all of the outdoor activity. If floor space is limited, a window perch may be a perfect solution. There are many different types and the mounting systems vary.

You have now purchased a cat perch, selected the location, but “how high should it be mounted?” Young kittens are still developing their jumping and coordination skills so; consider mounting it lower than for an adult cat. If you are a great pet parent and have both adult and kitten you will definitely want more than one. Locate the perch for your adult about two feet higher than the one for your kitten.

You have done all of this, but your fur companions seem to have no interest. Fear not, there are a couple of things you can do to encourage their interest. There are catnip sprays that you can mist each perch. They will instantly find the perch and watch them rub all over the perch. Once they start visiting their new elevated perch, leave a couple of treats or give those soothing strokes and calm praise. You will soon find you need several cat perches in every room!
