Hemorrhoids are a fairly common condition. They occur when blood vessels around the anus, rectal tunnel, or lower rectum get swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids are also known as piles. Pain, itching, and bleeding are all common symptoms of hemorrhoids, and the condition is not limited to any one age group.

Cases of hemorrhoids range from very mild to very severe. When caught early, there are home remedies that you can try to care for the symptoms on your own, in the privacy of your own home.

One thing that tends to irritate hemorrhoids is rough or scented toilet paper. Instead of using this type of paper, use soft, plain white paper. Moist wipes are even better.

When you have to lift heavy objects bend at the knees. Never lift with your back, and do not hold your breath when you are lifting. These improper lifting techniques place a great deal of pressure and strain on your hemorrhoids. Try to avoid lifting heavy objects at all when you have hemorrhoids. If you must lift, be sure to use good lifting techniques.

It might seem contradictory, but do not be inactive when you have hemorrhoids. Continue to exercise daily. It’s not necessary to overdo it, but exercise must be a priority, whether you are going for a walk, taking a walk at lunch with a co-worker, playing with the kids, or taking a stroll with your partner. Keeping your blood flowing will help your hemorrhoids heal more quickly.

It’s a good idea in addition to a fiber rich diet that includes fruits and vegetables to include a quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. Adding a daily nutritional supplement will help you ensure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs. An additional iron supplement will help keep your blood healthy, too.

Don’t take over-the-counter laxatives that are hard on your intestines and cause diarrhea. If you become constipated use a natural laxative. Prunes, dandelion root extract and flax seed oil can all be found health food stores. Simply follow the directions on the bottle for a safe, natural relief of constipation.

Use a cushion when you have to sit on a hard surface. Use a regular cushion, not the donut cushion designed for hemorrhoid patients. A donut cushion actually does more harm than good to your condition. It restricts blood flow and places more pressure on the varicose veins. Donut cushions cost $25 to $30, and are a waste of money.

Always remember to check with your doctor before you take any kind of medical remedy, including over-the-counter or herbal remedies. Each individual’s body is different, as is their medical situation. You and your doctor can best decide the course of action for you.
