When people talk about love handles, they are are talking about their stomach, oblique (side of stomach) and lower back area. Whether fat gathers here or elsewhere purely depends just on you and your genetics. Typically fat gathers there and particularly around the hips and thighs in women, to give extra protection to important organs. Unfortunately, we can not decide we do not want our fat stored there, so we have to do the best we can to reduce the weight in this area by watching what we eat and exercising.

When exercising to get rid of love handles, the muscles that need concentrating on the most are, the obliques and abdominal muscles. Here are some simple exercises that you can do at home that will work these muscles.

Seated russian twist - Sit on the floor with your feet together and knees bent. Place your hands in front of your stomach and keep them together. Lean back until you feel like your abdominal muscles are having to work to keep you in that position then slowly rotate from side to side. Focus on rotating the whole of your upper body.

Side plank - You need to use your forearm in this exercise to keep your body off the ground. Lie on your side, keep your body straight as you do this, use your forearm to lift your body away from the ground. Keep everything as straight as possible and feel your abs getting pulled. Hold for 45 seconds then swop sides.

Slow bicycles - This is a great exercise to do when you are watching the TV. Lie down on your back. Place your hands behind your head and lift slightly off the floor. Bring your right knee up to your chest then reach across with your left elbow to touch it. Keep your other leg as straight as possible. Alternate this and feel how it pulls across your stomach muscles.

If you find these not challenging enough then you should considered using free weights if you don’t already. This is the ultimate in core exercises as heavy free weights need at stabilizing more, and your core muscles do this. If you find free weights to challenging then think about doing stomach exercises with a swiss ball or resistance bands.

If you continue with this exercise plan you will see less love handles and more muscles.
