Our bodies maintain their bodily functions by extracting the vitamins we get from food. Thirteen different essential vitamins are needed by our body, some are fat soluble which can penetrate the fatty cells and some are water soluble. Production of hormones and regulating the functions of our organs are just some examples that require vitamins.

Vitamins are abundant in fruits and vegetables but each one differs in variety and amount. Super foods such as acai berry and goji has higher contents of vitamins than others. Other foods high in vitamins are mangosteen, pomegrate and blueberries.

Most people can get enough vitamins from fruits and vegetables because of the food they eat. Others for some reason who cannot get vitamins from food may opt to get it from supplements. Not all vitamin supplements are created equal though.

If you decide to take vitamin supplements, the first thing you have to do is to consult your health care professional or doctor about. Vitamin supplements are not like drugs which are regulated by the government, they are classified as food products so you are free to buy any kind of vitamins you like. However, your body may need only certain types of vitamins and buying vitamins without consulting your doctor may not benefit you. Always seek the advice of a medical professional so you will get optimum results.

The quality of the vitamin is very important. Every manufacturer can make their vitamins differently. They are not regulated therefore the producers can put variety in their products. Be sure you are getting the strength of a specific vitamin you may need that you are not getting from your diet. There are high quality vitamins and there are those whose quality is poor. Do your research or ask your doctor for a recommendation which brand and product is good.

The health food store may offer many different types and brands of vitamin supplements. The safe ones are what your doctor recommends but if you prefer another make sure that the composition almost matches the one that your doctor recommended.

Checking the label of the vitamin supplement packing is very important. It can tell you what vitamins it is composed of as well as the strength of each vitamin. Some vitamins provide you with special instructions on how to take it. Be very careful on following the instructions as this will provide you the most benefit. Choose the ones whose labels are clearly printed. The higher quality the vitamin supplement is, the higher price that will accompany it. It is your choice on the price range you will buy but if you can afford it, better choose the ones with the higher price.

Vitamin supplements come very useful especially if your lifestyle prohibits you from ingesting fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. So even if you cannot take vitamins from natural sources, supplements are always there to provide your body with the vitamins and nutrition you need.
